Now, bling isn’t the only reason why I run. I adore running for many other reasons that I shared in this Why I Love Running post.
But, yes, I must admit, I also love the bling, especially runDisney’s! Hauling them around the parks and in a carry on can be a pain, so before the last Princess Half Marathon, I whipped up a quick medal holder.
So are you interested in making a beautifully-crafted, Pinterest-worthy lined medal holder to protect your precious bling as well? Yes? Well, hate to tell you this … but you’re at the wrong place. You’re going to want to head on Heather Jergensen’s YouTube channel where she gives a full tutorial for those with some sewing skill. Now, if you have zero sewing skills and want to make a quick medal holder with just fleece and a glue gun, then WELCOME, you are my people! I gotcha covered with a super easy version you can whip up in about twenty minutes, less if you take off your perfectionist pants.
What you will need:
- Fleece or some other kind of soft fabric. (I’ve used felt before but it doesn’t have as much stretch and give as fleece. It will still work, though, if that’s all you have.)
- A ribbon or other trim for tying the holder shut
- Glue gun or fabric glue
- Pins, ruler and scissors
Measurements:
I made my first medal holder at about 7:00pm the night before leaving for the Princess Half Marathon. It took me about 10 minutes because I just cut a large rectangle, (approximately 16″ x 20″,) folded up the lower third lengthwise 5″, and then totally eyeballed hot gluing the pockets to be roughly 5″ wide.
You know what? This medal holder looked nice and worked like a charm. But one thing I didn’t like was how the outer pocket wasn’t long enough to wrap around. So for the video, I played around with these measurements and it worked great!
- Rectangle: 17″ x 21.5″ (or 21.75″ if making a six-medal holder – directions are near the end of my video shown below.)
- Lower third folded up: 5.5″
- The four pockets from right to left: 5″, 5.25″, 5.50″, 5.75″, (or 6″ if making a six-medal holder. Gives you more wrapping room.)
TIP: If you’re making multiple to give out as gifts to race weekend roommates or friends, make a 17″ x 21.5″ (or 21.75″) template from spare poster or cardboard!
Directions:
For that, watch my video … which was much, MUCH harder to film than I thought! (I’m so not a crafting vlogger, y’all.)
So there you have it, my take on a quick and easy medal holder! Might not be the fanciest but it will keep your medals safe from scratches and easy to transport. I hope this tutorial was helpful and if so, please use the tag #joyfulmiles on social media so we can see your creation!
