My Weekly Workout & Writing Wrap Up

Happy Sunday! I hope you had an amazing weekend and that you’re gearing up for a fantastic week!

If you listened to our Runner Burnout podcast, you know I’ve been dealing with burnout since May. Plus, not to get all dramatic, but Bob and I are stressed from situations beyond our control. So yeah, I’ve been clinging to any type of motivation I can find with both hands.

For me, report cards are a great motivator. So with this concept in mind, I’m jumping into the Weekly Workout Wrap Up blog link up that’s hosted by Holly from Hoho Runs and Wendy from Taking the Long Way Home! I’m also tossing in some writing as well since my goal is to finish three novels this year, two by October 30th and one during November’s National Novel Writing Month! (NaNoWriMo.)

Monday, September 10th

Jackey and I started Beachbody’s Liift4 preview in August. (You can listen to our initial thoughts in this podcast episode.) It’s a great program, one I highly recommend but I just haven’t been connecting with it. Instead, I found myself missing 80 Day Obsession so on Monday, I went back to the program I enjoy and does better things for my body!

80 Day Obsession Day 1: Total Body Core

I absolutely LOVE using the resistance loops. Yes, they can be a pain sometimes, but they’re oh-so effective! Rather than Beachbody’s that has only three loops, I went with these Fit Simplify Resistance Loops (affiliate link) that come in a set of five with a carrying case. Love them!

Tuesday, September 11th

80 Day Obsession Day 2: Booty

It’s booty day! My booty was not happy but I do love this workout. No photo today since I was in a rush, but OH MY GOSH, why has it taken me nearly fifty years to discover a love for avocados?? I had quite the marvelous lunch with this bad boy.

Wednesday, September 12th

My eldest son (and WVU student, go Mountaineers!) is having major issues with his apartment in West Virginia. Long story, longer drive. We left at 6:00am to meet with his rental property manager and didn’t return back home until 7:00pm. By then, I was pooped and nodding off during dinner so you know what?

Rest day.

Thursday, September 13th

One thing I did love about Liift4 was it being a four-day program, allowing three days to run and rest. Seeing as how I have the Baltimore Half in October and Wine & Dine in November, I’m modifying 80 Day by dropping the two cardio workouts.

Well, sort of. Cardio Core has these AMAZING ab moves using sliders, so while they’re doing HIIT work, I run on the treadmill and then carefully get off to do the core moves. (I usually do about 2 miles doing this and then I’ll run another mile for a total of 3.) So here’s my future weekly schedule for Phase 1:

  • Day 1: Total Body Core
  • Day 2: Booty and Day 3: Cardio Core, supplementing HIIT for 3 treadmill miles
  • Day 4: Run 3 miles and AAA
  • Day 5: Legs
  • Day 6: Skip Cardio Flow for a long run instead
  • Day 7: Rest/Stretch/Foam Roll

I’m a bit out of whack this week so on Thursday, I did:

80 Day Obsession Day 3: Cardio Core w/Running and Day 4: AAA

My mileage is also out of whack because of the ab moves and me taking a call from my youngest son. Motherhood doesn’t end when your kids are grown!

Friday, September 14th

80 Day Obsession Day 5: Legs

No pics today … but yikes, my abs are sore from using these Synergee Sliders for ab/core work! (Affiliate link.) They’re one of the reasons why I prefer 80 Day over Liift4. While using these, I’m also working my arms, my booty, everything! Highly recommend these, even if you’re not doing a Beachbody program.

Saturday, September 15th

4 Mile Run

Oh, what a glorious morning for a run! It was overcast and cool, my kind of running weather. I took this one super easy … plus I messaged Jackey quite a bit because we’re doing last-minute planning for our Disney trip.

Sunday, September 16th

Rest & Roll!

I actually haven’t rolled yet, seeing as how my youngest son and his girlfriend were here for a visit until around 10:00, but now that I’m typing it, I have to! I had planned on doing a light run since we’ll be in Disney next week, but my legs are sore and I’m listening to my body.

Writing Wrap Up!

Why in the world did I decide to write a novel with four points of view??? I thought I had learned my lesson with Just Flirt, but nope, I didn’t, and as a result, A Year of Happy Endings is becoming quite the challenge!

But I truly LOVE this novel and each of the four main characters. This week, I finished rewriting two chapters, woo-HOO! I would be done a third, but I’ve decided to change the setting to better intertwine their storylines. I’m hoping to tackle the rest of that later today after packing for Disney!

If you’re curious about A Year of Happy Endings, you can read it for free on Wattpad! (Sidney Brooks is the name I might self publish under.) Normally, I never share a book until it’s completely written and edited at least twice, but posting chapters as I go along has been very motivating and is helping me ditch perfectionism!

Thoughts for this week:

I’m happy to be getting back to 80 Day Obsession! Liift4 is a fantastic program but it’s simply not for me. (I’ll share why once I’m back from Disney.) I didn’t get enough running in, though, but I’m cutting myself some slack while adjusting to the program and dealing with personal issues.

Next week:

  • Monday: Total Body Core and Run 6 miles
  • Tuesday-Thursday: Disney!
  • Friday: Booty and Run 3
  • Saturday: Rest
  • Sunday: Run 7 Miles

Thanks for reading and have a joyful day!

  1. Welcome to the linkup! I hope you find some positive inspiration here and that your burnout lessens! Looks to me like you had a busy week. We use those slider plates at CrossFit. And yes, avocados are yum!

    1. Thanks for the welcome and thanks also for hosting the link up! 😃

  2. Ugh on your son’s apartment woes. What a great Mom to help get things sorted out (I hope). I do too many different activities for that workout program to work for me, but I’ve heard good things about it.
P.S. Have you rolled yet? -)

  3. Welcome to the wrap, I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it for a month or so now and it gives me motivation to do my circuit training (I’m OK with running but argh, with the circuits). And thank you for explaining what those funny discs are that I see around: sliders! Must look into them. I have some resistance bands but find my exercises hard enough without them at the moment!

I had awful burnout in May, grieving set me working too hard and I nearly went completely. I have managed to pull it back to a better balance and happier me now, so it is possible and I wish you all the luck with that.

    PS haven’t come across any runner/writers before. I’m a runner/editor (non-fiction)!

  4. Wait, what? You are writing a novel from FOUR points of view? What a challenge! Kudos.

    1. A challenge, yes, and also kind of crazy!!! Plus I *know* I might have to eliminate one POV to give more room to develope the other characters but I’m being stubborn right now. Really makes no sense. 😉

  5. It’s funny, there has been ongoing stress in my life for months now, but for me that often motivates me to run hard! Something about pounding it out on the road makes me feel better.

    I love avocadoes. 🙂

Um, where do you live? Our weather both days this weekend was horribly humid! And hot. Summer hot! Maybe that means cooler weather is headed our way. 🙂

    1. I’m a Maryland gal, about 40 minutes above Baltimore! And oh yeah, I’m ready for some cooler weather … but not winter. 😉

I need to trick myself into having the same mindset, that running is the best way to relieve my stress because what I’m doing now ain’t working one bit! 😉 Thanks for stopping by and I hope you had an amazing week! 🙂

  6. Welcome to the Weekly Wrap! Thanks for the tip on using Sliders. I’m going to check into that. I have grown sons and one is not very happy away at college right now. We never stop momming, do we? I recently discovered a love of avocados too…as in tableside guacamole. Tableside makes it more healthy, in my opinion. 😉 Just FYI. My first half was at Disney. Come to think of it, so was my first full marathon. We took our kids often when they were young. Enjoy your trip! Thanks for linking!

    1. Nope, we never stop momming and this helicopter parent has plenty of gas in the tank, LOL!!! 😉 And I totally had to google tableside guacamole … looks fantastic, I’ll have to give that a try, thanks for the tip and for putting on the link-up! 🙂

  7. I so agree with you: Those slider discs are killer! It’s fun to read about your novel writing. I can just imagine how tough writing from so many viewpoints would be!

    1. It wouldn’t be as hard if I didn’t overcomplicate things. That’s one of my talents … making things super complicated. 😉 Thanks for visiting and hope you had an amazing week! 🙂

  8. Our youngest son graduated from WVU a few years ago and he loved it there. I’m sorry to hear that your son had apartment issues. Two of the three apartments/houses our son lived in were pretty questionable, but he ended up in a really nice efficiency in a newly remodeled old bank and loved living alone his last semester.

    1. Oh man, my kid would love living by himself after having roommates for so long! He’s at The Lofts which hasn’t been a problem until now. (Mold issues that they weren’t taking seriously.) He’s temporarily out of the apartment now and we’re hoping it will be resolved soon! Thanks for visiting and congrats on your youngest’s graduation! 🙂
