Podcasts for Runners: Laura’s Favorites | Friday Five

Anyone who’s trained for a marathon knows this requires a lot of road time where solo runners are left alone with their thoughts. For a training plan such as Hal Higdon’s Novice 2, we’re talking 460 miles worth which, for me, takes approximately 76 hours and 40 minutes.

Wow. That’s a lot of time alone with my thoughts.

I’d drive myself crazy … or crazier, I should say. So, while music is awesome, I mostly listen to podcasts and audiobooks, exercising both mind and body. For my fellow podcast lovers, I thought do a Friday Five on my favorite podcasts like Robert did in this post … plus a few extra. Enjoy!

Podcast for Runners: Laura's Favorites! Training for a marathon? Try exercising your mind and body by listening to podcasts on long runs.

1.) Mickey Miles and More Podcast

MickeyMilesPodcastSquare-150x150Pretty much the Grand Poobah when it comes to runDisney topics, this podcast created by Michelle Scribner-MacLean and Mike Scopa was responsible for all my entertainment and education while training for the Goofy Challenge in 2015. Fantastic podcast, and a fantastic resource for those who are attempting their first runDisney race!

2.) Team Shenanigans Podcast

Podcast for RunnersThis podcast is a recent discovery but I knew Chris Smith and the rest of the team were my people right away. Shenanigans?? I love shenanigans! A hydration check where they discuss what they’re drinking, which is often cool beers? I love beer! And in the first episode I stumbled upon, John Pelky did the sound bite? He’s adorable! Add in the fact that they discuss many interesting topics with lots of great info, such as Episode #36 where the focus is nutrition.

It was also awesome being a guest on Episode #34 although weirdo that I am, I haven’t listened to it for the same reason why I never read my published books. Because I can’t change any mistakes. My co-bloggers said I did a good job, so that’s good enough for me.

3.) Another Mother Runner

Another Mother RunnerOddly enough, I had just recently started listening to this podcast, despite being a fan of their blog for some time now. Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell are some serious runners with vast knowledge and a fun, easy-going vibe that’s pleasing to listen to, like eavesdropping on interesting ladies during lunch.

4.) Serial

Podcasts for RunningSeriously?? Why has it take me, a runner and a writer, so long to hear about this amazing podcast?? It’s made by  the creators of This American Life, where host Sarah Koenig tells one true story, chapter by chapter, over the course of a season until the mystery is solved. Brilliant. I’m still on Season One so don’t tell me how it ends.

5.) Michael Hyatt: This Is Your Life

Podcasts for RunningThis podcast is not fitness or running focused, by I just had to include this long-time favorite of mine since it’s all about living a quality life. Isn’t that one of the reasons we run?

After listening to a few of his 40-ish minute podcasts, I feel energized and renewed, no matter how tired my legs are.

Honorable Mentions

Perhaps this is cheating, but there are a few more that I must give a small shout-out to, such as:

6.) ProBlogger

Another recent discovery and an extremely helpful resource since I’m working hard to become a pro at blogging!

7.) The Self Publishing Podcast (and their other ones)

Perhaps this podcast doesn’t belong on this list, but if you are a writer–either self-published and/or traditional–the guys at SPP, Johnny B. Truant, David Wright, and Sean Platt never fail to inspire and inform. Between SPP and their other podcasts, Eight Questions, The Smarter Artist, and Ask Us Anything, there’s enough material to handle your Dopey Challenge training and more!

8.) WDW Radio

This Disney Nut simply couldn’t end this list without at least one Walt Disney World based podcast! I listen to this one whenever I need a WDW fix. With nearly 450 episodes, there’s lots of fix opportunities!

Thanks for reading and hey…

QOTD: What’s your favorite podcast for running and why?

Have a joyful day!

  1. Awesome list! I’m always listening to podcasts on my commute to and from work. A few months ago I did a post with some of my favorites and hopefully some of them can inspire you too: http://theprofessionalmomproject.com/top-5-inspirational-podcasts/ I also really like the Pro Blogger podcast. He has such great advice for blogging newbies. Good luck with all of your training!

    1. Awesome list, thanks for sharing your link! I’ve heard of Smart Passive Income but haven’t listened to it yet. Will have to add that and The Lively Show to my list!

    Hi Laura~
I’m looking through some of your older posts and found this great podcast list! I’m excited to listen to your suggestions.
My absolute favorite podcast is WDW Radio by Lou Mongello. I’m glad he made your list. I am on the WDW Radio Running Team and because of that group, I have grown to love running and feel happier and healthier.
I wanted you to know I love your website and videos! I’m so hoping to meet you at Princess Glass Slipper next weekend! I’d love to meet you in person and share a selfie. Your YouTube videos entertained me for the last month of Dopey training. The Minnesota winter was very icy the last few months and I’ve been indoor on the treadmill.
Sending you an online hug and best wishes for your foot.

    1. Hey Jennalyn, thanks so much for your lovely message and letting me know that my videos helped with your treadmill runs! That puts a big smile on my face. And I’d love to meet up with you during PHM! I’ll be at each race super early plus I always hang around afterwards for character pictures. If you want, send me your Facebook link and I’ll message you!
      Thanks again and safe travels!

        Laura-
I saw your email when I got up for work this morning and was so excited to hear from you!! I would love to say hi to you this weekend- it would be a highlight for my sister and I!
The 5k day will be busy as I am running it with my 15yo son (we are dressing as the Incredibles) and my brother-in-law and niece (they will be Moana and Maui). After the race, we’ll be racing over to the WWoS to the Kid’s races where my little girls have their first Kid’s Race.
10k and Half day I will also be there early and staying late for character pictures so I would love to meet you in person!!
I friend requested you on Facebook this morning and my profile picture is from Dopey in front of the castle.
Back to work….. although I’m having a hard time concentrating today because I’m sooooo excited for the weekend!
