In case you’re wondering, no, I’m not being paid to promote 80 Day Obsession nor am I a Beachbody coach or affiliate of any kind, as proved by what I’m about to say about their recommended supplements. I’m just a gal who’s working hard to change her life and sharing her experience along the way with complete honesty.
See, I love Beachbody workout programs. (Yes, I’ve never actually completed an entire one, but let’s breeze over that fact.) I love how they’re time bound by exact days, giving you a firm end goal. I love being told what workouts to do seeing as how I make decisions all the time, while I’m writing fiction, in business, or planning Joyful Miles’ content. With Beachbody workouts, all you have to do is just hit play and do the workout, so I don’t bulk at paying for their on demand service. I consider that a gym membership, one that can be done at home with unshaven legs.
But Shakeology and their supplement line?I think they’re overpriced, over-pitched, and possibly over-hyped. Plus the cynic in me is very leery of the non-stop sales tactics by Beachbody that you must consume these expensive supplements in order to achieve full success. I mean, if they offered these products at a fair price, and they worked, then absolutely, I’d order with no hesitation because I do believe good health is an investment and a lot cheaper than being sick.
But the price.
Here’s a cost breakdown of recommended doses for 80 days:
- Beachbody Performance Energize: $49.95 for a 40 day supply x 2 = $99.90
- Beachbody Performance Hydrate: $34.95 for a 40 day supply x 2 = $69.90
- Beachbody Performance Recover: $69.95 for a 20 day supply x 4 = $279.80
- Beachbody Performance Recharge: $69.95 for a 20 day supply x 4 = $279.80
So the total cost for a 80 days worth of the performance products not counting shipping and handling is $729.40. They do offer a bundle package available where all four products:
- Beachbody Performance Bundle: $199.95 for a 20/40 day supply x 2 = $399.90.
- Additional two containers of 20 serving Recover: $139.90
- Additional two containers of 20 serving Recharge: $139.90
Total bundle cost is $679.70 plus $23.95 shipping and handling. (More if you do separate orders.)
And then there’s Shakeology. A 30-serving bag is $129.95, adding up to $346.53 for 80 days. Holy cow. So not counting any shipping and handling expenses, in order to have enough of their recommended supplements for the 80 Day Obsession, you’d have to spend a minimum of $1,026.23.
Say it with me.
If my calculations are incorrect, someone please let me know. And don’t get me wrong. I do believe you can’t put a price on health. Plus, if there is a product out there that is safe, makes me feel and look amazing, increases my well-being and productivity, helping me be more productive and write more books that in turn, brings in more money and helps my family’s finances, then okay, add it to my shopping cart, please, and thank you.
But $1,026.23, not counting shipping?
I can’t. I just can’t.
Especially the Shakeology since I think the Vega Essentials Nutritional Shake Powder that sells at Target at $36.99 less discounts for an approximate 18 day supply is a comparable product.
And look, for the sake of giving a full and complete review of my 80 Day Obsession experience, I was willing to try all the other Beachbody performance products for 40 days to see how much of a difference that made. Then for the remaining 40, I’d try other comparable alternatives that I’m currently researching to see if there really is a difference.
Of course, this wouldn’t be entirely fair, seeing as how the last half of the program is more difficult, but by then, I’ll also be in better shape.
And I do realize that it’s unfair for me to make a judgement or criticize the price tag of a product I’ve never tried it. Maybe it could change my life. Maybe it’s exactly what I need and the outcome would be worth every penny. The cost, however, for a 40 Day performance supply is $363.80 including shipping.
Again. I just can’t do it.
The notion of becoming a Beachbody coach in order to get these products at a discount entered my mind for a brief second, but no, forget that. Adding a new commitment ain’t happening, plus I’m the world’s worst salesperson.
So this is why I’m not going to follow the recommended Beachbody supplement plan and will instead seek comparable alternatives. But seriously, if you are someone who has paid for the products, (and aren’t trying to sell me them,) I’d love to hear your input. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below!
Until then, I need to get going with my next workout. More later, thanks for reading this long, rambling post, and as always, have a joyful day!
I too would find it hard to spend 1G on products that are dietary supplements
Have you read the reviews on Amazon?
I did, but the reviews were so all over the place! Hard to get a true feel for the product. The only way would be to try them myself – I looked at the sampler pack but they’re very small – I don’t think it’d be enough to get a true feel. Thanks for stopping by!
I’m sort of doing the 80 Day Obsession workouts now (I’m training for a half so I’m going through the program slower than every day) and I just couldn’t with the supplements. Not going to spend that. I did try the Vega Sugar Free Energizer (which I think is similar to Beachbody’s pre-workout) and I do like it. I also have the Vega hydrate. I might check-out their protein powder.
I love the Vega hydrate!!!! The recover is good as well, but I didn’t care for the energizer. (I might have a different one than yours since mine isn’t sugar free.) But they’re really great and a good replacement!
I need to do an updated post, but I haven’t been following the plan perfectly either since that’s so hard to do with running. But I’m REALLY loving it so far!
Thanks for stopping by and hope the program is still working well for you!
I’m on my 2nd round of 80 DO and I bought in to the beachbody line of supplements when I hit phase 3 of my first time through. I like the products! They taste good! They do what the company says they will do. But they’re not a miracle product (and believe me, I’m not looking for a miracle product). What I am looking for is a reasonable price for the products! For the first time in a really long time by body feels good inside and out! And I want that to continue! So I’m curious to know what everyone else uses. The shipping prices along with the product prices are ridiculous to me! I did sign up to be a coach to get the discount but you’re not really getting as much of a discount as you think because you have to pay a monthly fee to be a coach. So really, you save yourself about $10 a month on shakeology, energize, and recover (the 3 products I bought regularly and fell in love with). That’s not enough for me when the prices are so high to begin with. Please help with alternative suggestions!!!!
Congratulations for kicking some 80 DO rear!!!! I really like the Vega protein powders from Target … I’ve tried the Garden of Life brand they also sell but it’s too powdery and doesn’t taste as good.
I also like the Vega Sport line sold on Amazon. The berry hydrate tastes AMAZING! They also have a recovery that tastes nice. I tried the pre-workout Energizer in orange and it was HORRIBLE. I think they’ve changed the formula, though, and the flavors offered now are Strawberry/Lemon and Berry. It might have helped but I haven’t tried it yet. All three are definitely a lot less expensive than the Beachbody supplements.
Thanks for sharing you experience about being a coach! I was curious about that. Best of luck with 80DO round two and let me know what you end up using!
I use NOW Sports Nutrition, Beta-Alanine 750 mg, Delays Muscle Fatigue*, Endurance*, 120 Veg Capsules instead of the Energize. That’s the active ingredient in Energize. I take it as one pill (serving size is 3 pills) and if I do a run later in the day, I’ll take one then with a glass of water as well. It’s SOOOOOOOO much cheaper and lasts so long. It’s $14.44 for 120 capsules right now on Amazon…. I’ve been so much happier with it that I’ve left off even using the rest of the Energize I still have.
I’m currently on Day 14 of 80DO, first time. I signed up as a discount coach but also have the military waiver so I’m not paying monthly to be a coach. I bought the challenge pack so I have all the supplements except recharge and hydrate. I don’t care for energize and will probably stop it. I don’t feel I need it. I’m going to continue recover though because I’m afraid of being too sore lol. I LOVE the taste of ShakeO, but won’t continue it after the program because, yeah, way too expensive. I’ve tried IdealShape which I could barely get down, gross. If Vega tastes as good, I may give it a go if I do round two. I read somewhere that IdealShape was comparable, but it is definitely not.
