April Progress Report and Injury Update

Today’s topic for the Tuesdays on the Run Blog Link Up hosted by My No Guilt Life, Marcia’s Healthy Slice, and MCM Mama Runs is Rate Your Month where bloggers chat about their running progress. So far, I’ve avoided this topic because … yep, still no running after seven long months! But since I’m trying to do more injury updates, why not jump in? Well, not jump. Limp in?

Gotta warn you, though. I’m feeling seriously bummed today.

When it comes to your health and fitness, do your research and consult your doctor.

Here’s part of the reason why. In my last update about my partial plantar plate tear, I left off with me being fitted for my new custom orthodics. Orthodics I was excited about. Orthodics I believed would be a crucial part of my recovery.

Well, they’re in.

And I hate them.

Loath, despise, hate, hate, HATE! So don’t be fooled by the smile. I did that for the sake of my latest Running Injury Update video.

Granted, I didn’t think I’d be able to pop them in, sing hallelujah, and dance a little jig. I knew they’d require an extended break-in period since they’re not only correcting my over-pronation and protecting my metatarsal joints with some heavy-duty bars, they’re also correcting my valjus, aka heel rolling. Still. I had no idea how painful they’d be.

I managed to wear them for an hour on Thursday and fifteen minutes on Friday while mostly sitting, but that’s all I could take. They made my feet hurt, my knees ache, and as a result, my injured foot has been hurting all weekend, making me fear that more damage had been done.

Sigh.

So I haven’t worn them since and I’m going back to orthodist on Wednesday to get them trimmed in hopes that will help. Then I guess I’ll try again.

Something else I might do is ask my doctor for a second MRI prescription. Or maybe I won’t. After all, the plantar plate is a thick ligament that can take up to a year or more to heal, so maybe seven months isn’t enough time and I need to just be patient.

But being patient is hard.

I want to run. I’m desperate to run again and seeing pictures on social media of other runners holding up their medals or sharing Garmin stats reminds me of what I can’t do. Having to miss the Cherry Blossom 10-miler sucked and it’s going to suck even more having to miss the Broad Street 10-miler in May.

And at what point do I just throw in the towel and get surgery despite conservative treatment being preferred?

And then there’s the eight pounds I’ve gained since last September which I can’t fully blame on my injury since I haven’t been putting much efforts into the workouts I can do nor have I been exactly eating healthy.

Okay.

Stop.

Enough of this whining.

<<shakes off my negative vibe because it ain’t doing me any good>>

I know what I’m going to do tonight. I’m going to re-do my outdated vision board that’s been stored in the basement seeing as how I’ve already accomplished most things on it … hence, the reason why I need to make another one because they WORK!

(And wow, enough with the run-on sentences, right?!?)

So yeah. New vision board. Tonight.

And the next time I do an injury update, it will be with a better attitude … although nobody would truly believe me if I was nothing but Pollyanna Positive about this injury nor would it be authentic.

Still. Mickey approves of this plan.

So hand me scissors and glue sticks, folks. I’m going in.

    1. Oh my, how it is possible that I missed all the comments on this post??? It’s now over a year older, (and I need to re-do my vision board,) but yes, I will need to share mine! Thanks for visiting and my apologies for the late response!

  2. Oh no! Im so sorry the orthotics are awful! Would you be able to try a different kind? Thats terrible that they are causing you so much pain. I hope you get it figured out. I am still waiting on my orthotics (they were ordered 3 weeks ago) I have no idea what to expect. Good luck with your vision board!

    1. Oh my gosh, I’m embarrassed at how your message completely slipped under my radar!! My apologies and I hope your orthotics worked out great! I’m now so used to mine that I can’t imagine running without them. 😉

Take care and hope all is wonderful! 🙂

Thanks so much for your blog – I feel your pain, quite literally unfortunately! To cut a very long story short my crippling metatarsalgia was misdiagnosed last year as Morton’s neuromas and capsulitis. No mention whatsoever about plantar tears despite two of my toes drifting together! Suffered the agony of cortisone injections (which have probably made this worse!), got custom orthotics – which have managed to re-injure my hip (which stopped me running 2 years ago!). Now waiting for new orthotics, hip physio – and like you it’s driving me nuts! Such a relief to read your posts. There’s so little info around on the subject (plus I swear googling it has just made me more depressed – will I ever learn!). Anyway good luck with your journey – here’s hoping in a few months (years?) time we’ll both be back on our feet quite literally 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh, Cath, I’m so embarrassed for missing your message!! My deepest apologies and I hope that by now, (over a year later,) you’ve found relief from this frustrating injury!!! Please let me know how you’re doing! 🙂
